Top 5 Pennsylvania Drive-In Theaters
Article originally posted on www.erieinsurance.com(opens in new tab)
The feeling is nostalgic: A night under the stars, the front seat laid all the way back and an old family classic playing on the big screen. Your loved ones are probably chewing popcorn a little too loudly and the car is probably getting a little too dirty, but it doesn’t matter; it’s all a part of the drive-in experience.
For generations, drive-in theaters have been entertaining movie fans across America. Lucky for you, Pennsylvania is home to some of the United States’ oldest and most popular outdoor theaters. We have generated a list of the top five drive-in theaters in Pennsylvania to help you make the most out of your next movie night.
But before you load your car with your favorite blankets and pillows, make sure you have the right auto insurance to protect your vehicle.
The Mahoning Drive-In
If you are a fan of cinematic classics and elaborate movie-themed weekends, you are in for a treat. The Mahoning Drive-In takes movie marathons to the next level with themed events that span several days. Past events have included live Q&A’s with actors, themed food, live DJs, photo opportunities, giveaways and more. To top it off, Mahoning has the largest CinemaScope Screen in Pennsylvania at 109 feet! It showcases cinematic classics exactly the way they hit the screen–on 35mm film.
Becky’s Drive-In
Becky’s Drive-In has been a fan favorite since 1946 and has the awards to prove it. Becky’s has been voted “Best Drive-in Theater” at the Morning Call’s Readers’ Choice Awards and is recognized as America’s 5th best drive-in theater by USA Today. This family-owned theater operates two screens nightly, each showing back-to-back features. Becky’s even offers “Report Card Nights” where kids who show their report cards at the box office watch free! And did someone say food? Becky’s snack bar covers all the essentials with menu items including chicken tenders, pretzels, cookies, hot chocolate, candy and more.
Kane Family Drive-In
The Kane Family Drive-In is more than your traditional drive-in theater. For starters, you can play mini golf before the movie with your family and friends for only $2. This location also offers events throughout the year. In the past, this has included several filmed country concert premieres with big stars like Blake Shelton and Florida Georgia Line. Another highlight is Kane’s affordable pricing — children 5 years and under are free and the cost is only $3 for older children and senior citizens.
Shankweiler’s Drive-In
87 years! Shankweiler’s Drive-In is America’s oldest operational drive-in. (How cool is that!?) It has been fully operational since 1934 and was the second drive-in theater to open in the United States. During the summer, Shankweiler’s is generally open nightly and offers 9 p.m. and 11:35 p.m. show times. And if you need snacks with your cinema, Shankweiler’s has you covered. The funnel cake and Pork Bar-B-Que are a couple of their snack bar favorites.
Bar Ann Drive-In
Get ready to mix the “world’s brightest digital projector” with a 1950’s drive-in experience. At Bar Ann’s Drive-In, you can enjoy them both. This drive-in entertains all ages with children under five getting in for free. Also, be sure to check out the snack bar for tasty foods that will complement your movie under the stars.
